My family and I recently relocated from Brooklyn to a much warmer Florida. And with this warmer (nay scorching) climate it’s important to eat well and take care of our bodies. Whether you live in a tropical paradise or simply enjoying a summertime getaway, let's all dive into the world of eating healthily in warmer climates.

Light and Refreshing Meals

When the sun beats down, heavy meals can leave you feeling sluggish and uncomfortable. Opt for lighter, refreshing dishes that won't weigh you down and get acquainted with fresh fruits and vegetables; they are now your best friends. They provide essential nutrients, hydrate your body, and often have natural cooling properties that can help regulate body temperature in warmer climates. Include items like mint, cilantro, cucumber, and yogurt in your meals to experience their refreshing effects. Whip up a delicious tzatziki sauce with cucumber and yogurt to beat the heat and add a burst of flavor to your meals. And can everyone say, “Salad”? Hop over to Sue Knorr’s article on 10 Tips for Sensational Salads goes into more detail on specific food recommendations as well as salad hacks provide essential nutrients while keeping you cool and satisfied.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

In hotter weather, staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining good health. Water is undoubtedly your go-to source for hydration, but you can also jazz it up by infusing it with slices of cucumber, berries, or refreshing herbs like mint or basil. My personal recommendation is making a Peach Bellini Mocktail with mint in the ice cubes!

“Hot Grill Summer” with Caution

Hot and Grilling sound very appetizing, but warmer climates can present challenges when it comes to food safety. To avoid foodborne illnesses, keep perishable foods refrigerated or stored in coolers when outdoors for extended periods, and be mindful of consuming raw or undercooked foods. Also, when loading up on the delicious meat or various forms of protein make sure you’re balancing it with adequate forms of carbohydrate. All you need is your hand and your eye to determine that balance (think circumference of your palm as the protein amount, and the circumference of your entire had (fingers and all) as your favorable carbohydrate amount (or half that amount for unfavorable carbohydrates).

Smoothies with a Purpose

If you’re on the move or feeling the effects of the heat depleting your appetite, Smoothies are a fantastic way to stay nourished while enjoying the summer vibes. My go-to is the Mixed Berry Smoothie but with a scoop of the ZoneRx Vanilla Shake powder Experiment with different flavor combinations and discover your personal favorites. Smoothies are not only delicious but also a convenient option to boost your intake of vitamins and minerals.

Staying in the Zone in warmer climates is an opportunity to explore a wide range of fresh, delicious, and hydrating foods. By incorporating an abundance of seasonal produce, staying hydrated, and opting for light and refreshing meals, you can keep your body nourished while beating the heat. So, let the flavors of summer inspire you, and enjoy the benefits of a healthy diet that supports your well-being, no matter how high the temperature.
